General FAQs
Hemorrhoids are swollen veins in the lower rectum and anus, which can cause discomfort, pain, and bleeding. They can be internal (inside the rectum) or external (under the skin around the anus).
Hemorrhoids can be caused by straining during bowel movements, chronic constipation or diarrhea, sitting for long periods, pregnancy, obesity, and a low-fiber diet.
Common symptoms include pain and discomfort, itching and irritation, swelling around the anus, bleeding during bowel movements, and a lump near the anus which may be sensitive or painful.
Hemorrhoids are diagnosed through a physical examination and may include a digital rectal exam. Additional procedures like an anoscopy or sigmoidoscopy may be used to diagnose internal hemorrhoids.
Treatment options range from conservative methods like dietary changes and sitz baths to medical treatments such as rubber band ligation, sclerotherapy, and coagulation therapy.
Severe cases may require surgical procedures like hemorrhoidectomy or hemorrhoidopexy.
